# WhatsApp Business API Pricing

Sending WhatsApp messages through Zaapi uses the WhatsApp Business API, which is charged by Meta. This page explains what you're charged for, what's free, and how to keep your costs down.

### How you'll pay for WhatsApp Business API

Meta bills you directly for the messages you send, at its published rates. Zaapi doesn't add a markup — what's on Meta's rate card is what you pay.

Your Zaapi subscription is separate: it covers the Zaapi platform — the inbox, broadcasts, automations and analytics — rather than the cost of the messages themselves.

**You'll need a payment method on your Meta Business Portfolio before you can send template messages.** Without one, template messages and broadcasts will fail. To add one:

1. Go to [Meta Business Manager](https://business.facebook.com/) and open your Business Portfolio.
2. Go to **Billing & payments** (or **WhatsApp Manager → Payment settings**).
3. Add a credit or debit card and set it as the primary payment method for your WhatsApp Business Account.

### What Meta charges for

WhatsApp bills **per message delivered**. What you pay depends on the type of message and on whether the customer has messaged you recently.

| Message type | When it applies | Cost |

### Where to find the exact rates

Rates vary by country and change periodically, so always check the source rather than a blog post. Note that rates are determined by the recipient’s country or region, not the sender’s.

### How to reduce your WhatsApp costs

**Send fewer, fuller messages.** Billing is per message. Three short messages cost three times one message that says the same thing. Review your automations and workflows for anything split across multiple sends.

**Use Click to WhatsApp ads and Facebook CTA buttons as your entry points.** Conversations that start there are free for 72 hours, for every message type. If you're already running Meta ads, pointing them at WhatsApp instead of a landing page converts an ad click into a free messaging window.

**Reply within 24 hours, every time.** It's what opens the free entry point window, and it keeps the customer service window alive so you don't need a paid template to restart the conversation.

**Categorise templates honestly, but correctly.** Utility rates are lower than marketing rates and come with volume discounts. An order update genuinely is utility — don't submit it as marketing. Equally, don't dress a promotion up as utility; Meta re-categorises templates it disagrees with, and it can pause them.

**Target broadcasts instead of blasting them.** Every recipient of a marketing broadcast is a charge, whether they read it or not. A 300-person segment that converts beats a 3,000-person send that doesn't, and it costs a tenth as much.

**Cut wasted sends.** Contacts who never open your broadcasts still cost you full price. Check your broadcast analytics for segments with low read and reply rates and stop including them.

### Frequently asked questions

<details>

<summary><strong>Does my Zaapi plan include WhatsApp messages?</strong></summary>

&#x20;No. Your Zaapi subscription covers the Zaapi platform. WhatsApp messages are billed to you by Meta at Meta's rates, with no Zaapi markup.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Does Zaapi charge me anything per message?</strong></summary>

&#x20;No.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Why did my bill go up in October?</strong></summary>

&#x20;Free-form replies and in-window utility templates became chargeable on 1 October 2026. If most of your volume is support conversations rather than campaigns, that's where the increase comes from.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Why did my broadcast fail with no messages sent?</strong></summary>

The most common causes are no valid payment method on your Meta Business Portfolio, a recipient count above your daily messaging tier, or a quality rating that has dropped. Check billing first.
